Orthodox reject official's denial of anti-Orthodox attacks

Keston News Service (10.06.2002)/ HRWF International Secretariat (11.06.2002) - Website http://www.hrwf.net - E-mail info@hrwf.net - A leading Serbian Orthodox monk, Fr. Sava Janjic, has rejected claims by the chief advisor to Kosovo's prime minister that there have been no attacks on Orthodox sites in Kosovo since 1 January.

Fr. Sava pointed out to Keston News Service that continuing attacks - including those on churches, graveyards and nuns over Orthodox Easter - had been documented by Keston, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Fr. Sava noted that the chief adviser's "preposterous lie" seriously compromised the credibility of the prime minister and his closest associates and that denial of the attacks encourages extremism and intolerance and "hardly contributes to confidence building between the communities in the province".
