Human Rights Internships in Brussels Some Opinions
Human Rights Internships in Brussels
Human Rights Without Frontiers Int’l (Brussels) proposes internships to qualified students and holders of a university degree. The internships are intended to provide:
- a better understanding of current human rights issues and international humanitarian law;
- an insight of the role an NGO plays in the contemporary human rights protection discourse;
- better knowledge of the European institutions;
- training in international advocacy.
Interns are assigned to one of the HRWF Int’l projects (please refer to our web site http://www.hrwf.net for more information) or other current activities and according to his/her interests. Duties include, inter alia,
a) Researching human rights issues and mechanisms of international organizations;
b) Attending meetings at the European Parliament;
c) Participating in lunch-conferences in Brussels;
d) Advocacy and networking;
e) Drafting analytical papers and reports;
f) Substantive and technical servicing of meetings, backstopping fact-finding and technical cooperation activities;
g) Translating reports, statements and other documents;
h) Office duties, such as answering phone, running the office email, etc.
Due to the numerous requests for internships, the limited capacity of the office and the limited availability of the internship manager, interns are selected from a pool of highly motivated students and holders of a university degree in, for example, political science, social sciences, religious studies, journalism and law. Candidates must have a very good command of English. Interns interested in working for projects in Belgium or France must have a fluency in French. Other language skills are an asset.
The minimum duration of an internship is usually three months. When applying for an internship, candidates should indicate the period for which they wish to be considered. No internship starts after May 1 due to summer recess.
The internships are not remunerated. Travels costs and living expenses, as well as health insurance must be borne by the interns themselves or by the sponsoring organization. Interns are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
Interns are usually expected to work full-time; the office hours of the Secretariat are from Monday to Thursday from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other options for interns are possible upon agreement.
In order to apply for an internship, please fill out the application form and email it to Mr. Willy Fautré (
